Darkstalker

Post by Wiseman »

Darkstalker [General]
You are adept at hiding from creatures with special senses.
Creatures with abilites such as blindsense blindsight, mindsight, tremorsense, ect. don't automatically detect you. Instead they must roll (HD[or CR?]+3+Wis) or their own spot/listen, (whatever's higher) to find you.

OR

Creatures with abilites such as blindsense blindsight, mindsight, tremorsense, ect. still automatically detect you. However they must roll (HD[or CR?]+3+Wis) or their own spot/listen, (whatever's higher). If they fail, they are treated as flatfooted against you.

EDIT: forgot to add explanation. special senses bone stealth characters, however, normal darkstalker breaks the game the other way, so i came up with some alternate versions that aren't quite as broken. (I think).

Darkstalker is fine as is. Giving a level check instead of a spot/listen check does nothing when the rogue has a +15 competence item. In the second version, there is no reason for a rogue to ever ever take darkstalker because that's a worthless feat.

Darkstalker is not fine as is.

The first version just gives things without ranks in spot ranks with spot, and is therefore actually slightly not shit, in that it makes darkstalker not instant invis to oozes for no reason. And the same for Dragons that don't take spot because they rely on blindsense.

On the other hand, it does nothing to solve the problem character, the Rogue with Darkstalker, because he is already going to be breaking the RNG on Hide anyway.

But by the way, at no point in either example do you explain what the DC to detect is, so I choose to believe that exceeding a 1 on the check results in detecting the rogue.

Version 2 is not useless, it is a very different feat though. It gives you SA against shit with Blindsight, which is not a bad thing, but probably not even remotely worth a feat.

Things with Blindsense, Scent, Tremorsense, ect are still already flat footed. Only Blindsight and maybe a couple other things prevent flatfootedness.

Do something to fix the inherent problem of D&D skills in general and stealth skills in particular or accept that anything you do will be a half solution that will either not solve the problem or create more problems that may or may not be worse.
